Energy Cleansing Rituals and How To Perform Them

An energy cleanse is a ritual performed when you're feeling stuck, overwhelmed, anxious, or simply in need of a fresh start. It's about clearing away stagnant or negative energy from your space and yourself, creating room for positivity and clarity.
Common tools used in energy cleansing include sage bundles, palo santo, incense, crystals (such as selenite or clear quartz), and sound (like singing bowls or bells).
You might also use salt, water, or simply open windows to invite fresh air and light into your space.
The ritual typically begins by physically tidying your space, then moving through it with your chosen cleansing tool whilst setting clear intentions. You might use affirmations such as "I release what no longer serves me," and "I welcome peace and clarity into this space," or "I am protected and grounded." The practice leaves you with a refreshed environment, a clearer mind, and an open heart ready to receive what's meant for you.
An intention setting ritual is deeply personal and tailored to your specific needs and desires. Whether you're seeking prosperity and abundance, love and self-compassion, protection, mental clarity, or simply peace and grounding, intention setting helps you focus your energy towards what matters most to you.
These rituals are often performed during meaningful moments. A great example is during the new moon for new beginnings, the full moon for release and gratitude, seasonal changes, or simply when you feel called to reconnect with yourself.
They're commonly accompanied by crystals chosen for their particular properties: rose quartz for love, citrine for abundance, black tourmaline for protection, or amethyst for clarity and intuition, to name just a few.
An intention setting ritual might involve lighting a candle, holding your chosen crystal, writing down your intentions, meditating, or creating a small altar space. The key is making it meaningful to you.

Sometimes the idea of adding another task to an already busy or chaotic schedule feels like a big ask but much like exercise, mindfulness, and meditation, a regular energy cleansing practice is well worth making time for.
In life, we encounter people, places, and situations that carry their own energy, and often without realising it, we absorb and carry that energy with us throughout the day. Much like a computer or phone that slows down when clogged with data, we too can feel the drain of accumulated energy and benefit greatly from an occasional cleanse.
Energy cleansing is a powerful way to clears tagnant energy from your home, create mental clarity, and invite a sense of calm into your space. When we intentionally cleanse our homes, our surroundings, and ourselves of stagnant or negative energy, we acknowledge what has been, release what no longer serves us, and make way for the good.
Increating that space, we open ourselves up to new possibilities, fresh energy, and all that we wish to welcome in.
The reasons for performing an energy cleansing ritual are deeply personal, but the fundamentals of the practice itself remain largely the same regardless of your intention. An energy cleansing ritual can be performed by doing the following:
Using an Altar or special spot within your home, prepare your space by using the items in the Energy Cleansing and Renewal Ritual Kit
Shell (for Water)
Candle (for Fire)
Palo Santo (for Air)
Selenite Crystal (for Earth)
Sage bundle
Lighter or matches
Choose a central or meaningful spot in your home. Arrange the shell, candle, palo santo, and crystal on a clean surface, representing each element. Place the shell at the north (water), candle at the south (fire), palo santo at the east (air), and crystal at the west (earth) if you wish to work with cardinal directions.
If you do not have an altar, effective substitutes include using a windowsill, a designated 'meditiation corner', a tray or even a shelf.

Take a few deep breaths, centering yourself and setting the intention to cleanse your home of negative energy.
Using your matches, carefully light the candle on your altar, representing the element of fire.
Hold the sage bundle over the candle flame until it begins to smoulder and produce smoke. If you prefer, you can also use the palo santo for additional cleansing, lighting it in a similar fashion.
Starting at your altar or chosen spot, gently wave the sage smoke around your arranged items, acknowledging each element. Move clockwise around your home, allowing the sage smoke to reach every corner, doorway, and window. Visualise the smoke removing negativity and inviting positive energy.
As you move through the space, repeat a cleansing affirmation or prayer of your choice, such as: "I cleanse this space of all negativity; may only love and light remain."
Once you have finished smudging the home, return to your altar or chosen alternative. Thank each element for its contribution to your cleansing ritual. You may wish to leave the candle burning a little longer or extinguish it safely now.
Once the sage has burned out, collect any ashes in the dish and, if possible, return them to the earth outside as a sign of gratitude.
